Community Arts

Lawyers Alliance assists nonprofits that make visual, musical, cultural, and performing arts an integral part of life in low-income communities. Our Community Arts program priority helps organizations to provide artistic outlets and use the arts to foster education, social supports and services, and urban development.

Clients are engaged in enrichment activities for children and the elderly, in-school and after-school programs, music and dance performances, therapeutic arts programs, and other community-based arts activities.

Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls, based in Downtown Brooklyn, empowers women and girls to develop self-respect, leadership skills, creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration using music education and mentoring in its summer day camp, after-school programs, and community events. Shortly after obtaining incorporation and tax exemption in 2005, the organization came to Lawyers Alliance for the first of several specialized legal projects. As the organization's needs evolved, Lawyers Alliance staff attorneys and pro bono counsel from Jones Day have assisted with emergence from fiscal sponsorship, intellectual property rights, volunteer and employee handbooks and employment practices, bylaws, an office lease, and corporate sponsorship agreement. In 2012, Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls has expanded to serve 450 youth annually.

"Lawyers Alliance has given us access to the highest quality legal counsel. This expert legal advice has directly increased the number of youth that Willie Mae Rock Camp serves by allowing our program staff to focus on the children rather than attempting to do our own legal research."
