  Corporate Engagement Counsel/Manager
  Founded in 1969, Lawyers Alliance for New York is the leading provider of business and transactional legal services for nonprofit organizations that are improving the quality of life in New York City neighborhoods. Each year, Lawyers Alliance represents 700 nonprofits on 1,200 legal matters and works with over 1,900 volunteer attorneys from law firms and corporations to provide these services. Lawyers Alliance's expertise-driven legal services help organizations to improve their programs, operations, and finances.

Lawyers Alliance seeks an experienced lawyer and/or project manager to play a significant role in the continued expansion of its corporate relations and national activities, with an emphasis on corporate counsel volunteer management. Primary responsibilities of the position include:

  • Plan and implement corporate outreach strategies to attract and retain a strong and steady pool of quality pro bono attorneys from corporate legal departments to represent Lawyers Alliance's nonprofit clients.
  • Develop, coordinate, and participate in pro bono opportunities that engage business and transactional attorneys from selected corporations in meaningful service opportunities, including legal representation of nonprofits, pro bono clinics, and educational trainings.
  • Expand and maintain institutional pro bono and philanthropic relationships with the corporations in Lawyers Alliance's volunteer network.
  • With colleagues, help organize Exponentum™, a national network of business law pro bono providers serving different geographic regions around the United States, whose members collaborate on joint legal and educational projects and work with law firms and corporations to advance the field of business law pro bono nationwide.
  • Coordinate and participate in Lawyers Alliance's client outreach, case placement, volunteer support and training, quality control, case closing, and program evaluation functions related to corporate pro bono projects.
  • Write and distribute timely articles, analyses, and marketing materials, and make oral presentations, to encourage and support pro bono legal work by lawyers employed by business and transactional lawyers.
  • Assist in Board development, Gala honoree cultivation, and special projects as they relate to Lawyers Alliance's corporate counsel and national initiatives.

This position offers the opportunity to be involved in some of New York City's most dynamic public interest work and improve the delivery of pro bono services. Qualifications include at least 5 years of relevant work experience, preferably in addition to a J.D. or other relevant graduate school degree. Experience related to the corporate sector, corporate transactions, nonprofits, managing junior staff, volunteer management, and relational databases are all a plus. The ideal candidate is able to work with varying people and constituencies, highly organized, and excellent at multi-tasking and coordinating a variety of messages, audiences, and projects.

  Fellowship Opportunities
  Lawyers Alliance is interested in hosting one or more fellows who have third-party funding:

The National Center on Philanthropy and the Law Fellowship in Nonprofit Law (NCPL Fellowship): The NCPL Fellowship in Nonprofit Law permits one Fellow each year to spend a year in residence at a nonprofit organization. The 2019-2020 Fellow will work closely with senior staff and staff attorneys at Lawyers Alliance who have practice specialties that will expose the Fellow to a broad range of disciplines that address the legal needs of nonprofit organizations. Given the varied nature of the legal work performed by Lawyers Alliance and the diverse group of nonprofit organizations it represents, the NCPL Fellow will experience the widest possible exposure to representing nonprofit organizations on interesting and complex legal projects. These legal challenges will enable the NCPL Fellow to develop relevant skills to the maximum extent.

Business/Transactional Law Fellowship: This fellow would work at Lawyers Alliance full-time as a staff attorney for one year and provide invaluable legal assistance to nonprofits that are serving low-income communities and creating a better New York, while he or she develops professional skills and practical experience. During the coming year, Lawyers Alliance expects that the fellow would work on a range of legal projects. From advising nonprofit clients on board governance, fundraising law, and workforce reduction issues, to helping them review and negotiate contracts and strategic alliances, the fellow and other Lawyers Alliance staff attorneys will provide much needed legal guidance to dynamic organizations that seek to help hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers in a time of great need. The fellow will help present workshops to nonprofit managers. In addition, the fellow will assist with client outreach and screenings, publications, legal research and policy, volunteer attorney support, and resource calls from members of the public with questions about legal issues related to the nonprofit sector. (1-2 positions each year, usually beginning between September and January)

Affordable Housing and Homeless Services Fellowship: This fellow would work at Lawyers Alliance full-time as a staff attorney for one year and provide invaluable assistance to nonprofits that are serving low-income communities and creating a better New York, while her or she develops professional skills and practical experience. The fellow would work directly with the Senior Staff Attorney for Affordable Housing and Homeless Services on a range of legal projects providing legal services to affordable housing developers and providers of shelter and social services to homeless persons and other special needs populations. At the end of a year, the fellow will have had the opportunity to gain invaluable direct experience in transactional real estate and affordable housing. In addition the fellow will assist in providing general real estate services to nonprofits. The fellow will also help prepare and present workshops to nonprofit managers, assist with client outreach, client intake, publications and legal research and assist in incorporation and tax exemption applications. (1 position each year, usually beginning in September or January)

  Lawyers Alliance for New York's Board, staff, and volunteer attorneys are an unparalleled team of professionals who, together with our donors, are dedicated to improving the quality of life for people in low-income communities throughout New York City. Each year our legal staff, joined by more than 1,800 volunteer attorneys from 130 law firms and corporate legal departments, serves thousands of nonprofits working in all five boroughs.

Our nonprofit clients receive legal counsel on corporate structure and governance, tax, real estate, employment, intellectual property, and other business and transactional law issues that are critical to their operations. In addition, we present dozens of educational workshops and offer a series of publications, all designed to help nonprofit managers meet the legal challenges that they face when pursuing their missions. By specializing in business and transactional legal services for nonprofits, Lawyers Alliance directly impacts the nonprofit sector and New York City communities. Our services greatly enhance our clients' performance, which translates into expanded and improved programs for the families, children and adults who need them most.

2019 Summer Undergraduate Internship: Lawyers Alliance seeks a motivated rising college junior or senior for a volunteer unpaid internship during the summer of 2019. The intern will work in the office Monday through Thursday. The intern will:

  • Conduct online research related to the nonprofit sector and pro bono trends and assist Lawyers Alliance staff in gathering and analyzing research;
  • Follow up with clients and volunteer attorneys regarding recently closed matters;
  • Participate in Lawyers Alliance's client intake and screening process;
  • Collaborate with staff members at various levels dedicated to nonprofit organizations improving low income communities; and
  • Complete other projects as requested.
  • Ideal candidate will be a motivated, detail-oriented team player who takes initiative and knows when to seek guidance on projects. We welcome candidates who are flexible and have a positive attitude.

    Summer Legal Internship Program: Lawyers Alliance for New York hosts a 10 week unpaid summer internship program for law students interested in careers in business and transactional legal work and public interest work. This summer internship program provides opportunities for students to gain professional, practical work experience on legal matters in a dynamic learning environment. Summer law student interns work closely with staff attorneys to provide direct representation to clients on real estate, employment, intellectual property, tax, corporate governance and other nonprofit law areas critical to their operations. Working with our staff, law students will field and respond to legal questions and inquiries from clients and non-clients, conduct legal research, draft memoranda, attend workshops and webinars and assist in the development of new workshops and trainings, participate in client and volunteer attorney outreach, assist with updating and drafting publications, and conduct case monitoring. Specific examples of last summer's assignments include assisting with client intake for Legacy College Prep Charter School, assisting with a real estate construction loan closing for Community Access, updating materials in connection with a Lawyers Alliance employment workshop for nonprofit managers, and preparing a legal alert for distribution to clients on paid family leave in New York.
